A Women’s View: Channing Tatum is the new Gambit

Channing Tatum is set to play Gambit after Lauren Shuler Donner confirms the casting, Tatum will be taking over the role from Taylor Kitsch who appeared as Remy LeBeau back in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With rumor of an appearance in 2016’s X-men apocalypse and his own potential spin off, it doesn’t seem like we will have much of a wait before we see Tatum in LeBeau’s signature trench coat. If the spin off is true Channing will be only the second character to get his own film, a slightly unexpected move considering Tatum hasn’t played Gambit in any of the previous X-Men titles. However, Channing who grew up in Mississippi had expressed interest in playing the Louisiana born character in the past stating –

“Gambit is the only X-man I’ve ever loved” following up with “I don’t know, I just related to him….I would die to play him”

At the X-men: Days of future past premier in London last week Shuler Donner said “He’s a rascal, just like Remy LeBeau. And he can handle the action, we all know that”

Gambit is known as an outsider and ladies man and well Channing Tatum is simply gorgeous – So the ladies man part is down pat! Not only does he the ability to create, control and manipulate kinetic energy, he is also highly skilled in card throwing, hand to hand combat and the use of a bo, a Japanese fighting staff. Originally a professional thief, Gambit was trusted by very few X-men, a bone of contention between him and his love interest Rogue – Gambit also has ties to the villain, Mister Sinister. Gambit first appeared in Uncanny X-men #266 but had a cameo appearance in the Uncanny X-men Annual #14. Since then he increased in popularity rating 65th in IGN’s top 100 comic book heroes of all time.

Some people aren’t that happy to see Tatum in this role, but personally I’m looking forward to seeing how he portrays the character. However it is hard to picture Channing playing the one character loathed by the majority of the X-men. A few of my friends were not overjoyed with the choice saying Shuler Donner was the only person pushing for Gambit to appear in the next film, and that she only cast him as he was easy on the eye. What are your thoughts? Let me know :).

  1. “Some people” is an interesting way to interpret 98% of the people’s views on the internet that this is a horrible casting idea. LOL! Lauren Schuler Donner gets no sympathy from me.

    1. Well I gotta say we dont know, I feel that it cant be worst then Taylor Kitsch, plus with Tatum’s dancing abilities he be able to give gambit the aerobatic moves that is known for the character. Anyway, I’m on the fence for any actor playing a comic book character, definitely gotta see how Tatum looks when he grows his hair out for the character which i hope he does.

    2. I agree that he can’t be worse than Taylor Kitsch. The jury isn’t out on him for me especially as I’ve never seen Tatum in this type of role – he may surprise everybody. So im interested in seeing his portrayal and seeing if he leaves a lasting impression.
