Artist Spotlight!: Mike Mitchell

This-one-3

Hello there fellow art lovers, today’s Artist Spotlight is on one of my newest favs, Mike Mitchell, I recently discovered him through one of my favorite art site Mondotees, which recently held a gallery showing of his most recent work, a collection of Marvel inspired artwork. Mike Mitchell is an American artist in Austin, TX, known for his pop surrealism and poster prints. Now if you didn’t know Mondotees is one of the most popular and in demand producers of what I consider fine art posters, that are extremely sought after and highly collectible. They commission amazing pop culture artworks from amazing talents, the posters cover a wide range of topics like music, movies, comics, games, cartoons, and TV shows, so your desire to represent your love for something can definitely be represented thru beautiful poster form. So it was a amazing thing that Mondotees decided to showcase Mike Mitchell’s artwork because his work definitely is a site to behold, covering one of my most beloved topic, Marvel Comics.

His art style borders on the real to the cartoony at times, he use a mix of styles to accomplish different effects, some artwork is very vector base in style giving him bold sharp line work, as well as a combination of painting style where you get good tonal value. His also plain contrasting solid color backgrounds to make the either pop and/or stand out from the background. My most favorite is his portrait series, where he takes famous pop culture characters and does side portraits of them, I especially love his recent portrait series where he did side portrait versions of Marvel Comic book characters. Make sure to check out his other works of art at sirmikeofmitchell.com. And if you like what you see and read then please, share, like, and comment, help us spread the loving.

The Comic Book After Market!

TBA12Hey there comic book lovers, I’m here to report to you on the ever fluctuating market of the comic book investing and after market world, talking about some of the hottest comic books on the market right now, and some of the high money making ones as well. For me I love collecting comics that can command high values just for the fact that I have a valuable and rare book and the experience of the hunt for them, but for others that only looking at it as an investment or a quick and high turn around, hopefully this list will help everyone.

Walking Dead #1 – $2,360 – a high grade of this title can easily fetch for a average of over a thousand if your a unlucky seller.

Walking Dead #2 – $535 – up from $380.

Walking Dead #3 – $350 – Walking Dead has proved quite the return on investment, no?

Walking Dead #19 – $355 – the 1st appearance of Michonne has kept this later issue up there with the earlier issues.

Walking Dead #27 –$176 -for this first appearance of the Governor, this issue has remain in the range of $150 and only if you a lucky seller do u get above the range of $200, so this issue hasn’t have much of a higher increase from a year ago like the others,.

Preacher #1 – $370 – With the recent AMC TV news, this issue has seen sales and values increase rather quickly.

Preacher Preview #0 –$350 – a preview comic sent out free to stores to advertise the comic, it is insanely valuable now because so many were thrown away.

Chew #1 – $350 – this used to be a fifty dollar book when it came out, and then it hold steady at $150 for a time, but thanks to the new animated series being recorded it got a new resurgence in the market.

Batman Adventures #12 – $325 – relatively from nowhere the first comic featuring Harley Quinn has rocketed to the top of the table.

Elseworlds Eighty Page Giant$316 – reprinted of late, but its been putting on value.

Elseworlds80-PageGiantRecalledCover

Bone #1 $300 – this however has crashed from $800 two years ago back to this level.

Amazing Spider-Man #300 – $300 while the 1st appearance of Venom has recovered its value nicely.

Avengers #55 – $1,336 – after news that Ultron will be the villian of the second Avengers movie, his 1st appereance have been commanding some crazy high prices.

Iron Man #55 – $550 – another comic book that is enjoying a surge in demand thanks to the movies is this gem, the 1st appearance of Thanos, most high grade copies of this usually automatically command over $300.

Walking Dead #4 – $237

New Mutants #98 – $231

Y_the_Last_Man_1

Y The Last Man #1 – $208

Walking Dead #18 – $202

Walking Dead #6 – $200

The next few are more of the unknowns for me, I wouldn’t really think these issues would command such high prices, being that they are not very popular or well known besides to maybe the crazy fans or underground comic lovers, which kinda represents the comic book market, things will go down and things will go up, and things well be in demand and others won’t. I definitely believe in the motto that something is only worth how much someone is willing to pay for it, a Action Comic is only worth over a million if there is a millionaire willing to pay that much for it.

Jawbreaker – Marvel’s Hard Hitting Heroes Special – $226 – cant figure out why a collection of reprints, reprints of issues that are nothing special even, is also getting such big bucks for.

Knights Of The Dinner Table #1 – $217 – not being much of a indie comic book fan nor a fan of the topic of the title, I wouldn’t have seen this one coming.

The Crow #1 – $210

Peter Panzerfaust #1 – $220 – this issue I’m kinda surprise with too, it’s a ok story but I didn’t expect it to go this high, I guess because talks that it may go to either the big or silver screen this title is enjoying a surge of desire by comic book collectors.

Now know that the comic book market is a very fickle beast, prices can easily fluctuate so be warned if your out to only make money, there are very few books that will always command big bucks throughout time, many books don’t stand the test of time in the comic book after market. I feel that many of the books that are getting a surge in price thanks to movies and TV shows fall into the category of the ones that may not stand the test of time, these comics are better fits for selling quick and selling at the right time, like when they movie or show hits the world and was successful at it as well. Rorschach Mask With Moving Inkblots

mask

Today I got this really interesting fan made product, especially to fans of Watchmen, from Grafixfan is a Rorschach mask, but not just some ordinary one either because this one comes with some unique effects that actually create moving and similar ink spots. The effect is pretty cool to watch and looks like a bit of photoshop trickery, but it’s a collector’s item one can buy. Grafixfan created the designs by using a nontoxic fabric ink that reacts to your breath. It is a pretty unique idea and is the next best thing in coming close to the Rorschach’s mask effect, I would have loved if the actually ink spot on the mask would change because the ink spot that does change is very light and doesn’t really change any unique designs. You can choose from five different inkblot patterns that’ll have you looking like you’ve stepped right off the set of The Watchmen. http://www.rorschachmasks.com/
