Hello there comic book readers, today’s review is All New X-Men #4, and what a issue it is, like I said in previous issues I had my doubts of the quality of this title, thanks to its concept, but four issues in and it is an amazing soap opera story. Bendis has given the X-Men some life, giving them express some great dramatic emotions, showing off some amazing character struggles.
Before I go a bit more in depth, be sure to read previous review and know that there may be some spoilers. The original X-Men have finally met up with the present Cyclops and this is the part were Bendis writing really shines. We have turmoil of the original teenage X-Men over meeting what is now the “evil” and life harden Cyclops, as well as the seeing the future Magneto (a enemy of the original X-Men) that is now working with Cyclops. The story may still be dialogue heavy but this time around there is a lot of wonderful emotion juice to it, with both groups struggle with the event of meeting each other. Iceman’s comment to facing Magneto gave me a real good chuckle, and everyone else felt very natural in Bendis’ good hands, we also get solid character defining moments for the new members of Cyclops band of mutants. Like always, me biggest complaints have been that there hasn’t been much action in this title, and nothing that really wowed me in cool or amazing moments, but with this issue, there were such good amounts of emotional story crafting that it was easily passable.
There is absolutely nothing I could say about Stuart Immonen’s artwork that I haven’t said before, his work is amazingly beautiful. His work is top notch here, amazing amount of character and backdrop detail, he wonderfully break up pages with well created panels, and his characters show a great range of facial emotions and body language. Wade Von Grawbadger ink work is also very nice, its clean and solid with a good use of shadows, and Marte Gracia colors are equally good and solid work.
As I continue to read the All New X-Men series, the story is getting better and better, that dialogue is spot on to really enjoyable a lot of the time, and the drama top notch. Also, if Stuart Immonen and crew are staying on for the long haul then this is a most see comic book title. My continue complaint about the series is my attention and desire to continue reading the series is weak, there just isn’t enough action for my taste, and there not wow factor for me. Besides for my complaint, this is a “Definite Buy” issue, and here is hoping for more action pack issues in the future.
Here are a few pages from All New X-Men #4, be sure to pick up your own copy which is in stores now, and like always Have Fun Reading!
