Hello there fellow comic book readers, today’s review will be from the Marvel Now event, we have All New X-Men #1, writer Brian Michael Bendis, with art by Stuart Immonen. This is part of Marvel attempt to shack things up the Marvel Universe, as well as give know readers a good jumping on point. In recent Marvel’s recent event, Avengers vs. X-Men, we had Cyclops being possessed and corrupted by the Phoenix Force, and after the combine force of the Avengers and X-Men, he was defeated, and the power of the Phoenix Force was dispersed, starting the rebirth of mutantkind.
Brian Bendis has the task of writing the fallout of the events of Avengers vs. X-Men, in one of the X-Men flagship titles. Bendis starts the issue with one of the big fallouts of the AVX event, with Beast experiencing a next generation mutation thanks to the dispersion of the Phoenix Force, many exist mutants are experiencing further mutation or new mutants are popping up. After the fallout of AVX, Cyclops and a small band of X-Men has become a fugitive, attacking humans to get ahold of new mutants. On the flip side, Wolverine’s band of X-Men are figuring what to do about Cyclops reckless actions, and in the situation Bendis has created inner turmoil within the group, because they need to stop Cyclops but don’t want to start a Mutant Civil War. Bendis’ talents truly shines here, crafting great dialogue and exciting drama that has undoubtedly give new and old readers a desire to continue reading this new title. I must also admit, the new direction of Cyclops character is a needed change, he is like the Magneto of the new era, attacking humans for his brethren and believing his reasoning and actions are just.
Stuart Immonen’s artwork is amazing, creating amazing character and action poses, expressing wonderful character expressions, and showing gorgeous details in both characters and environments. Just looking at the opening pages of the title is a great example of Stuart creating great expressive characters; one can clearly see the turmoil and pain of Beast. Also, I gotta admit I loved seeing Cyclops putting up the X-Men symbol, very cool, something I never thought I say about Cyclops, great action pose.
I had big reservations of reading this title because of what I already knew before this title had come out, but from Bendis interesting dialogue to the amazingly gorgeous artwork of Stuart, I will continue to see where this title is heading, all the while hoping that my worries of the title wont come to fruition. So in my buying opinion, I feel that this issue is a “Definite Buy.”
